As part of the 2014-2015 budget the Australian Government announced the establishment of Primary Health Networks (PHNs) to commence from 1 July 2015. The key objectives of PHNs are to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of medical services for patients, and to improve coordination of care to ensure that patients receive the right care in the right place and at the right time; which will be strengthened through GP engagement.
As a consequence of this change in policy direction, South Eastern Melbourne Medicare Local (SEMML) will cease its operations effective 30 June 2015 and will be replaced by the South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (SEMPHN) effective July 1 2015.
While the decision to end this chapter of primary health care is a sad one, it also brings some certainty to staff and stakeholders. We hope the new PHNs are supported by all our stakeholders and given every opportunity to succeed and we do hope you will continue to see some familiar faces in the new organisation post-June.
SEMML thanks you for your support over the last 3 years. It has been a privilege working with all of you.
